How do you put powers into this sort of text? For example, 1,000 to the 10,000th power? Yeah, The Princess Bride is that good. :D

The Fellowship was definitely a better movie than the Two Towers.

The Last Unicorn is one of my favorites!
Narnia, both the animated movie and the newer, live action, one were both good.

There are others, but none are coming to mind...

I agree Stardust was very entertaining. Try rolling up a Tristan Thorn, let me know what you come up with. My list goes something like this:

The Princess Bride
Willow
LOTR Trilogy (I count them all as one story)
Stardust
Dragonslayer
Krull
The Neverending Story
Conan the Barbarian
Time Bandits
Clash of the Titans

Special Mention: Harry Potter flicks

Legend, Labyrinth, Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Last Unicorn barely missed the list.

I wuv Princess Bride!

Anyway, here's some others (in no particular order), not sure if all of them fit the genre tho, but the fantasy category has got to be pretty broad right?

Dark Crystal (more cuz I had a picture book of it when i was little)
Neverending Story I & II (huge crush on Jonathan Brandis when little)
Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Promise (beautiful!)
V for Vendetta (this is the one I'm most unsure about genre-wise, but it seemed pretty fantastical to me)

See I'm more than a one trick pony ;)

Well, if you expand to sci fi ...

... Blade Runner, Dune (both versions), Children of Dune, Macross: Do You Remember Love? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Super_Dimension_Fortress_Macross:_Do_You_Remem ber_Love?), Akira, The Incredibles.

If you expand to wire fu, Hero, House of Flying Daggers.

I watched that one because I'd read the book by Andre Norton...

Don't remember too much about the movie, except being disappointed that it didn't actually resembled the book in almost every feature.

It was loosely based on ideas from Andre Norton in her seminal science fiction novel The Beast Master, although it did not use plot, setting, or characters from the novel.

Heh.. I guess other people agreed with me.

The 13th Warrior

Dungeons & Dragons, the movie

if you've seen it, you know what i mean....:D

Outside Tom Baker was the ONLY shining moment, and the only one acting...no, I do not.

Mine: Return of the King
Fellowship of the Ring
Two Towers (Two words, Tolkein Rocks!)
Princess Bride (duh! If you don't have it or even seen it, what planet are you on?)
Willow (Wicket and Val Kilmer)
THe Dark Crystal (Jim Henson's Finest)
Labyrinth (Dance magic Dance!! David Bowie...mmmmmm)
Beastmaster (MarK Singer? First one)
Neverending Story (Every little kid's dream...)
Ladyhawke (Phiffer, Haegur, Broderick, AWESOME ACTING...I said the Mouse who shook in fright, once i knew a hansome knight. Wolf by night and man by day, a quest to win and a foe to slay...)

Honorable Mention, but never forgotton: Monty Python's the Holy Grail. To hate it is to hate all that is amusing and not French.

Dark-Star

HAWK THE SLAYER.....

I have been trying to remember the name of this movie for a while now, was very neat when it came out, on Showtime i think.

At the time of release, Excalibur was mind blowing in how good it was. R rated fantasy? Almost unheard of. Copared to today's standards... well.

Borderline for the genre, but Heavy Metal, specifiically the last story.

Total cheeseball flick, but anyone remember the viking movie with Lee Majors (the Six Million Dollar Man)? Who knew barbarians wore trimmed 1970's mustaches?

gfunk
03-14-2009, 10:13 PM
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was so good it ruined pretty much every other fantasy film for me, with the possible exception of the Princess Bride, which scores marks for humor and memorable scripting.

The other contenders all seem pretty cheesy to me.

Can't wait for the Hobbit to come out. So glad that Peter Jackson is still involved with it.

I'd put Record of Lodoss War in the top ten just because of the barbarian sequence the preamble leading to the battle with the dragon is also nice. I'd love to see a sequence in DDO where someone buries a great axe in Velah's schnoz.

Dragonslayer would be in my top 5.

Honorable mention Beastmaster.

For me The Barbarians would fall into the top ten worst fantasy movies along with Legend.

what about Time Bandits, that was pretty fantastical.

and methinks that you all have not been giving Conan The Barbarian its due. go back and watch it again if you arent catching my drift. it has got every element that it takes to make a GREAT fantasy movie, and one of the greatest villians of all time in Thulsa Doom, (What is steel compared to the hand that wields it). its got the whole back story that brings Conan around to what he is now, its got plenty of high adventure, its got drugs and alchohol and sex and plundering and magic and Subatai. and the score stands alone. "there comes a time when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, the throne room becomes a prison. all that is left is a fathers love for his child"

Conan the Barbarian, the best movie of all time IMO

most of my favourites have already been listed... but a couple that havent are:

Ella Enchanted i think is worth a mention, very well written and anne hathaway plays the role very well

If your gonna allow star wars as a fantasy, then you have to allow Mel Brooks Spaceballs

another mel brooks one, Robin Hood Men In Tights...

you cant diss someone that makes such great parody's of blockbuster hits...

And yes, the d&d movies werent the greatest, but at least the first one had a bit of humour in it... and i still like the quote "I'd have to put a feeble mind spell on myself to want to take *you* home."

Army of Darkness
Highlander (the original)
Barbarian brothers (still cracks me up)
Cheech and Chong's Corsican Brothers

No one has mentioned the more recent "King Arthur" with Clive Owen and Keira Knightly. This is one of the best because...

a. Kiera Knightly is just hot wearing the rags you see her in first.
b. Kiera Knightly is just hot wearing the blue gown you see her in later.
c. Kiera Knightly is just hot wearing leather straps :eek::eek::eek::eek::D.
d. Kiera Knightly is just hot wearing that wedding dress.

Fixed.

1. Lord of the Rings (yes, as one movie)
2. Willow (Hey! I know you! You're the taikini I stole the baby from while you were taking a peepee in the forest!)
3. Stardust (Michelle Pfeiffer is still hot)
4. The Princess Bride (Inconceivable!)
5. Enchanted (guilty pleasure? Sure. But Amy Adams is hot too)
6. Prince Caspian
7. Earthsea (You know, the one from the Sci Fi channel, soon to be SyFy for whatever reason)
8. Monty Pyton and the Holy Grail (Can STILL quote the whole thing, much to the dismay of my family)
9. Eragon (The author was 2 grades behind me in high school. Cool kid, but the movie doesn't do the kid merit)
10. Reserved for whenever they do something with The Wheel of Time series. Depending on how well they do, this spot may change in relation to the others.

The LOTR Animated version was the Best!
Conan the Barbarian was 10 times better than the Destroyer.
OMG, I bought Sword and the Socerer last year and I couldn't believe how crappy that movie was. I was my favorite movie growing up as a kid!
hawk the Slayer was cool, until you watch it again. Some movies are better left to our childhoods!
The last Unicorn
Excalibur - Boorman was a genius! Liam Neeson as Gwaine classic.

Keep waiting for Johnny depp to do Elric!

I don't know what it is, but there's just something about Labyrinth (and I do not mean David Bowie or Jennifer Connelly, or however it's spelled, although they are fine in it).

The LOTR Animated version was the Best!
Apparently they clipped the pronunciation of "Saruman" to "Aruman" (although not all the instances for the snip) because they were worried about people getting confused between "Saruman" and "Sauron."

Keep waiting for Johnny depp to do Elric!
Seems like a natural. Now who for Moonglum?

The various "Star Wars" movies. And to stave off potential objections, "Star Wars" is not Science Fiction. It is fantasy.

Parts 4 through 6 I can buy into Star Wars. When Jar Jar was introduced it all went to hell.

Japanase Anime:

3x3 eyes
Black Magic M66
RoboTech: The Macross Saga

Cyborg with Val Kilmer. Crappy movie, but I like it much better than any of the Star Wars Movies. Which of course only proves I was dropped on the head as a child (repeatedly).

I love lists, so here is my Top 10 Fantasy (Sword & Sorcery) Films of all time.
Please comment and add any changes you see fit.

1. Return of the King
2. The Two Towers
3. Fellowship of the Ring
4. Conan the Barbarian
5. Excalibur
6. Clash of the Titans
7. Legend
8. Willow
9. The Dark Crystal
10. Conan the Destroyer

OK peeps, so what am I missing?

Should just put the LOTR trilogy. If you have to separate them, Two Towers was definitely the best one.

Think I'd remove Legend, Conan, Dark Crystal. I might add Princess Bride, Chronicles of Narnia, Sinbad & the Eye of the Tiger, and definitely Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Spoof or no, that is classic and perhaps one of the most quoted flicks of all time.

Not a fantasy movie but still deserves a mention is the old cartoon Watership Down, very captivating film.

Two Towers is great except for the sequence where Aragorn traces the steps of Merry and Pippin in the Orc/Urukai camp is messed up. It is something like:

Merry and Pippin craw with untied hands.
Horse almost stomps a Hobbit his hands untied.
Then they cut their ropes.

I have to watch it again to get it exactly right but that scene is annoying.

Some of the films being suggested are in the genre of "Sci-Fi" (Star Wars), while others fall under the category of perhaps "Sword & Sandal" epics, aka "Historical Dramas".

I have not heard to many others mention Clash. of the Titans

I do not remember Hawk, but my curiosity has been sparked.

I vaguely remember The Last Unicorn, can anybody fill me in?

All the Baski ANIMATED films are AWESOME!
So are all the Ray Harryhausen films: Jason 7 the Argonauts, Sinbad, and yes Clash of the Titans.

REMOVE CONAN the BARBARIAN from the list!!!??? Destroyer yes BARBARIAN NEVER!!
