The animation already exists, from kobolds and from the eternal wand of acid splash, for a direct damage, fireball like, acid spell.

EASY DEVELOPMENT - let's take this animation and make it useful.

5th level spells, since most spells of that level are useless anyway, that functions like a fireball, ball lightning, etc - uses that animation - and does acid damage. Voila, bonus spell and a little love for all those poor gimped acid spec'd characters out there.

(Note: 8th level might not be a bad choice for something like this either, actually)

I always thought they used the Melf's Acid Arrow graphic for Acid Splash... maybe I'm wrong.

But, I do agree that Acid/Lightning folks could use some more spells - even if the Devs have to homebrew em in like Niacs.

The Energy Substitution Metamagic Feat would be nice......

It'd also be great if they'd take acid splash, change the visual colour to blue and change the damage to holy.

Voila: Holy Water splash...new level 1 cleric spell and also available in one-shot clickies (holy water bottles) that anyone can use.

The problem with this feat, it seems to me, is that then there would be no character-side difference between being specced for fire/cold or acid/lightning, as all the spells would more or less be equally available and the enhancements are the same. Therefore, which ones were best would be governed purely by equipment availability, eg, improved/sup glaciation is available and magnetism/corrosion are not, so everyone would spec for fire/cold and use the feat to make spells into cold.

unless major tweaks were made to eq availability o r the affects of enhancement lines, the effect of that feat would be to make all sorcerors and wizards functionally identical.

Doesnt energy sub raise the level of the spell? If so then it would simply be a cost difference.

Energy sub would add a cost to the spell, thus not making them all functionally the same since not everyone would sub the same way. Plus not everyone can/will get the same equipment. Add to that the fact that different mobs have different immunities and you would still need to have different specing options. If you put it all into cold, you would regret it at some point.
