View Full Version : The joys and woes of being "female" in DDO

^_^ running on a idea the good Doctorwhofan gave me I decided to start a thread about the silly things in game we girl gamers have put up with. Now mind you I know that there is no way we can keep this strictly girls only so im putting it for guys who have played females to post to. Cause lets face it even guys who play female characters (specially if they are cute elves) have had the random player who falls over their feet to impress them.

funny things that have happened to me in game so far:

1. first week in had offers of marriage proposed, had several high end items just given to me. Oh man did I get teased ummercifully from some of my former guild mate for it. But I cant blame them when someone just gives you a pearl of power X item that says something.

2. Had men insist on telling me the ins and outs of not only DDO (which at first I didnt mind because this is technically my first mmo ive tried others couldnt get past the building part cause the graphics were ugly and just couldnt do wow cause too many people from another game I knew played and they were too hardcore ie call me up middle of the night even though I have a kid to play types). But then tell me how to play PNP which ive played for well over 10 years now just cracks me up.

3. Will make all sorts of dude references then apologize when they hear my voice "oh wow your a girl..wait really your female.." hehe still makes me laugh

4. bad awful terrible jokes I mean some where I couldnt even force a laugh and almost felt bad cause you could tell they were trying but ugh just painful attempts at humor.

5. the ladder thing and I know some of you guys dont think we girls know what your doing, but their isnt any real reason to linger on a ladder while were climbing up above you so stop it already LOL. Not like ya can see anything anyway.

Also the funniest thing I had happen when I first started with kalari I had no idea that when you removed your robe you were pretty much standing around in brown skivvies. Well I was in the market place took off my robe to try another and must have had the skivvies on too long cause a guy walked up and bowed to me Lmao that was the best.

K guys and gals im sure you have your own tales, and heck there might even be some guys who had to deal with crazy gamer chicks. This thread is open for all your tales of fun and woe.

For those of us who are guy gamers who HAVE played the random female toon. I got one...

My female barbarian was the character in this scene.
My mic was literially broken and my wife who plays with me, made the party.
She informed them that Linmei (my toons name) would not be on mic.
Halfway through the quest, I realized my laptop has a builtin mic, so I switch the settings.

I micced in.

We started the next quest in the series (Tangleroot) and two guys dropped. One sent a tell to the wifey saying..god, thought she was a chick.
Can't look at the game straight right now cause its a dude.

I laughed.

lmao now that is priceless. I will admit I was shocked when I first played and a friend of mine who plays a drow female bard talked on mic. I didnt know it was his alt so when I heard his voice come threw I was speechless. Then I said politely "now that just isnt right, cute drow female with your voice coming out of her" we both laughed for abit after that one.

On a Tempest spine run I had a guy who I guess had his fill of guys who play females. I hadnt talked much during the quest cause I was trying to keep up, though a few of the people in group knew I was female. One of my friends flirted with me and the guy says "be careful that may look like a female wizard but I see that wand in her pocket." so I said over mic "I keep my wands in my backpack. And my wands are of the magic kind not any other kind of equipment thanks." After that he couldnt apologize enough, my friend laughed so hard over the mic. Hehe so I guess there are a few non believers out there that girls play ddo.

Well in AoC things are worse one poster told of a group that demand that his(female character) strip off her armor and preform for them a simulated act the player refused and was killed. Good grief is that game filled with idiots as most people in the thread defend the actions of the offenders.

The forums are pretty out of control over there. Not that I'm a fan of censorship, but I've seen some deplorable and nasty things said that would've led immediately to a thread deletion and ban over here. We're talking WAY out of line.

Hmm, small wonder the forums there are densely populated with diehard PvP types. Not to say all PvP people are like that, because they aren't, it's just that PvP seems to be a magnet for maladjusted miscreants.

I pretty much ignored General chat on Zug after watching people bash the French for a solid hour because some people were speaking French in General. By and large I think the community here is well behaved, mature and respectful.

I agree, funny thing about AoC right now is you can still post right now even if your account is inactive.

Well the pendulem can swing both ways. There are some female players I know who have male characters in game. Some with really "girly" voices. Seeing a he-man warrior (usually a human or dwarf male) with that voice can be just as much an issue to some as the "cute elf" with the deep baritone....:)

Now as a fan of the RP part of RPG's, even MMO's, sometimes a character concept works better as a female character. My Paly and Ranger and Fighter are all male. I have some female characters clerics and arcanes. (stereotyping...yah sure...but it works). I also have a male dwarf cleric and a male drow bard. The WF I have, who knows or cares....

Most notable instance of an issue was almost a harrasing type one. Was running solo, Rest for the Restless IIRC on my cleric early on. It was late at night, and some male character kept coming up and sending tells and invites and then kept hopping about and doing the shadow thing next to me while I was recharging in the Inn. (between succesive runs...) Was tempting to accept his invite and begin a conversation and see how long the group lasted once he heard the voice behind the toon....

I like the "bro" comments :D

Of course, I refer to everyone by the gender of the character they're playing, even if I know they don't match. Keeps things simple. So guys, if you don't want to be called "she" and "her", consider yourself forewarned ;)

Somebody just called me god instead of goddess. Ok, I was on with a male toon, but i had I mic!!!

For playing male characters, I pick the name first, then what they are second. Jennysmith is a female, Sousake is a male. Healbotatron, a WF, is the only Gender confused. After people say "a WF cleric?" they say, "A girl plying a WF?" It does seem silly, though.

lol id have liked to see his face when you did Zenako must really deflate a guy when they find out a female their falling over is a dude hehe.

And to the AOC thing kinda glad I dont play mmos like that cause its one thing to avoid flirters its another to be blantantly harrassed and there is no way id pay to deal with that ****.

I play a fem drow caster character. I've caught my buddy keeping his toon below mine on the ladder, or while swimming. If I call him on it, he usually tells me : "shut up - your spoiling it when you talk".

LOL normally most guys deny it they are like no you just jumped on the ladder first. But ive watched some guys climb down who did so first just to peek up hehe. I know I shouldnt spoil the illusion though :p

Funny thing happened the other night did vons 4 with my cleric, which means having to strip off her armor so she can make the jumps (yeah Im working on her jump skill) I get it done go to the tavern to finish up the chain and you would think I had did walked in, in something sexier then brown skivvies lol. Im sorry I still dont get whats so sexy about underwear that looks like paper bags. Can we get some corsets in this game? hehe.

This is the main reason I have a couple nice elf/drow female characters, they are a lot easier on the eyes... it gets old real fast looking at a dwarf butt.

I'll typically stay off VC when playing the females to help keep them in character, only problem is one is a rogue. The barb learned real fast to not run ahead of the rogue... he got nailed in a couple particularly nasty traps in Foundation Elite.

07-11-2008, 03:48 PM
I had someone in one team give me grief when I told the group I am female ( No VC, that would have been proof positive), because he didn't believe I actually was. He seriously thought I was a guy running a female character. I told him several times, and he kept saying "Yeah, right. I know you're a guy." There were some folks in the same team who know me well, and we were sending some funny tells about it back and forth! :)

I've also had my share of people hitting on me, but I find that a minor inconvenience. Same problem in RL, you know? It translates. I guess the attitude I have the most trouble with is when someone finds out I'm female, and all of a sudden, their personal preconceptions of what a "female is supposed to be like" come into the mix, and I either get treated like I don't know what I'm doing, all of a sudden and need to be told how to play, or somehow become inconsequential.

These are the folks who never team with me again.

Hey!!!

I don't hit on female Dwarves!! Now Elven Men....

A pit off topic here, all the men complain about the women running (it used to be seccy but not anymore) The men's run, is well, like he has on a full diaper. Human men are the worse!

I played male toons when I first started, then a friend convinced me to roll a female and I just kept picking females as I rerolled or created new chars. I don't have any particular reason other than I just like em better. I have one male toon left, and the rest are his "harem" :)

Usually I get no grief whatsoever being a male running a female toon. But there was this one time, in Stormcleave....... Similar to post above. I was off voice because my son had borrowed the mic for a voice chat with a friend. Party was going well but one char, we'll call him Z, started flirting. I typed in party chat, "Dood, I am a guy" several times. I PMed him when he did not stop, "DOOD! I AM A GUY!" The rest of the group started laughing over it, and they told him several times over voice I was a guy. He just kept on winking and flirting. Later on I get my mic back, plug it in and tell the group I have voice.

A slight pause......

From Z, "DOOD! You're a guy!!!" Everyone fell out.

It was a good run though.

That's the problem with you girls, always chasing after your perfect fantasy guy. And always seeing the worse in the men closest to you. :)

Just wait, someday you'll be begging for that run-of-the-mill human guy to notice how you walk by him.

That's how I view it too.
My main is male, but many of my other chars are female. Barker had his beauties, and Talon has his babes! (hey it's a fantasy game!)
Plus if I'm gonna spend hours of my time staring at a char's behind, it might as well be an attractive one.

But I've got a mix of male and female chars.

Plus I've got this thing for long white hair (also blue skin) Andorian women and Shadow Lass from the LOSH.

Oh, give me a Halfling man any day. You can carry them, when you need to; And they dance better than Human men, who have the "Frog in a Blender" step perfected, or Elven men.....we shall not say. I must admit, though, Dwarven gentlemen dance divinely. Not as portable, though.

But seriously now,

In truth, I have a pretty even mix of male and female characters...

I think the ratio is actually 4 male-4 Female
and... a Warforged

Male persona I believe...Then again...there is that PINK docent!

I play male AND female characters because
I have Played Male and female characters in Pen and paper.

I think the female characters just look cooler!

The only complaint I could think of was that I wanted the hairstyle
the Rogue had on the intro for my Halfling Rogue, and
it wasn't in among the choices... :D:D:D

I had two human characters, but no more,
although I am thinking of a Human Paladin...

I am not sure...

Guess I will have to see...

Ok...so every day my Guild runs Reaver...before we do Reaver, we all jump up on the table in the "inn" in GH and we all dance. Two days ago I was on my cleric Alexondrya (female, human) and for some reason we all decided to get nekkid..well (and i wish I had gotten a picture), but one of the toons playing that wasn't in the group came up to all the female toons and offered us random pp/gp/cp. Like we were strippers! It was probably the funniest thing I've ever seen on the game in the past two years. I was crying I was laughing so hard.

LMAO! I did this to my guildies! All my male guildies love to run their female drow & elf characters (for visually appealing reasons no doubt). Being somewhat feminine myself, I tend to run pretty girly looking characters, so that is what they are used to seeing me on. One day I decided to pull my super butch, mo-hawked, human male barbarian out of retirement for a guild shroud run. They freaked every time I spoke or ran by one of them. They said it seriously creeped them out and forbade me from ever running that character again. Ha ha! Take that boys!

The character I built to replace the one mentioned above is a female dwarf barbarian, who's appearance is as feminine as I believe a female dwarf barbarian can be. I was running out to PoP to meet up with a pug group and once I got there, the male dwarf fighter in the group grabbed my character and began to dance with her. He continued the whole quest "in character" telling my character how hot female dwarf fighter-types are and how he is ready to pledge his undying love to her. I'm sure he meant it all in fun and fun it was. The party and I laughed so hard we were practically crying the entire quest.

I pick gender along with the toon concept. My main is Trilou a 16th lvl soc. For me (wrong as it may be) when I think soc I think female... like wise wizard male. Then the name is a big part. Silly I know, but I normally have a name BEFORE I start the build. As for funny stories, it happended just this last week. I started a bow build which I made a female elf. While running harbor quest I joined a group. Everyone said hello and such, execpt for me who typed a hello (I had just started to eat some dinner). Once I joined the group at the quest the leader turned his toon toward me toon, after a brief pause he stated "Izrah... I see you have v/c on". I typed: yes. Yet another pause followed by "Do you have mic". Again I type: yes. At which he responds "Can you please talk on it" After a quick chuckle I keyed up the mic and ask him in my best Berry White voice, "What would you like me to say"? In what seemed like a nano second he responded, "Nevermind"! The real beauty was the last spot was filled by a female cleric... and almost the exact thing happend!!!

1st off let me say i am a guy and have 3 female toons.
It always seems strange to hear a male voice from a female character.
Also i have been know to play my fiancees characters on occasion. She does not like voice and rarely talks but the people she runs with usualy know her and that she is female. The has been a few time when she has asked me to play her characters for specific quests or for a BR break etc. I Always use voice so i can only imagine the faces of the other people in the group when i start spouting off " 3 incomming ogres on the left!" .

The stories are awesome hehe part of me kinda feels sorry for guys who dont check before they flirt with a female in game now but only a little bit lol. Ive been told I have a sexy voice (I dont think so but meh) so Ive been tempted to make a male character to freak out some of my friends maybe even a WF still working on the details and the build it will be funny to say the least.

Can we get some corsets in this game? hehe.

we used to have g strings but for some reason the dev team took them out. now if you look closely on the chick you do the first side quest for cant remeber her name it somthing about a necklace being returned before goodblades she still wearing the g string they forgot to update her.
i got a kick out of it.

LOL I think there would be a lot of guys with nose bleeds if we women ran around with cute voices and g-strings.

Still contemplating making a rough looking dwarf dude and speaking in a group just to hear the reactions lol Im leaning towards making him chaotic for the Pink weapons! :p

Heh - let us know what kind of reaction you get! But, I'm also curious to find out how many players give no reaction.

Never saw screenshots of Lineage II did you?

And if you look at the NPCs, some of them have the g strings still showing. The sewer rescue wife is one such I can remember off the top of my head.

LOL I guess I dont go around looking at the npc panties but now that youve all told me that im gonna have to go look. I just wonder why they decided to change the player characters undies then? Its not like id run around nakie on my girls purposely only when my darn cleric needs to make those von jumps lol.

And trust me even then I still get hoots and hollers cause im nude (though I still think brown sack undies arent sexy lol).

Once I get back I may work on my newest creation though it may mean deleting one of the girls I dont play cause my last slot is saved for when druids come. Either way it should be fun to see what kind of butched male I can make and how different i'll be treated acting like a guy I wont talk for a bit either just to see how different it is. Then i'll pipe in and maybe get a laugh or two :p

Oh and hehe one of my guildies is loving this thread he teased me about it a couple of nights ago but he knows that ladder thing is true lol.
