View Full Version : halfling ranger tempest build feat questions

So I was originally going to make a halfling TWF fighter but got convinced to build a ranger instead and so far I am quite happy with that decision. I wasn't going to go the tempest route and so far am at lvl4 on this build and am thinking about changing to a tempest. If I do that means that I will have to push improved critical to lvl12, PA to lvl15 and give up OTWF. I suppose one option is to take Lvls 12-16 in Fighter and that would get me an extra(?) feat, but I would lose the favored enemy which I though evil outsider would be good since my understanding is most of the mobs in the vale and shroud are outsiders. The other question is, if I don't go with tempest should I change out the improved piercing and ranged feats since my dex should already be giving me a very good attack bonus and that would free up taking other feats?

Your starting stats are the same as my halfling build. I would advise you to go Tempest as the attack speed boost and the +2ac while dual weilding are helpful. Stay pure and take improved crit piercing. As far as OTWF or Power attack go this is my current dillema as I do quite well in the damage side without power attack do to critting more often so I am leaning towards OTWF so i can dual rapiers with less of a deduction, plus both rapiers will crit on a 15, anyway I digress. My Ranger is currently level 13 and I love it. I can boost my ac to I believe 43 with barkskin sure not uber but i take things down fairly fast and I'm easy to heal. Anyway good luck with your ranger.

Any type of weapon focus on a non-fighter is a waste at current end game.

Drop both weapon focus feats. You wont need em with finesse.

You have similar starting stats to Fyshie who sits at 20/34/18/12/20/12 all the time with only 1 +2 tome (1750 favor). and a couple of +1's that I have found on my own.

IC: pierce = good
Tempest = good
no more than 2 levels of fighter, as that will get you 3 feats if taken at the right time. Tho personally, I have only one multiclass ranger and hate the thought of doing another.
2wpn def = good
otwf = blah (rapier/sh sword +IC:P = murder with no added penalty)
toughness = good or bad... more hp is usually better, untill you get so many that the cleric thinks you only need a CMW and you really need a HEAL (you're just a ranger afterall.... you cant have that much health<my dorf at L13 has over 300>)
at lvl's 12 and 15 you will get feats, taking fighter at either of these should get you 2 feats total (iirc fighters get a bonus feat at L1, but i cant recall if thats ChLvl or ClLvl). Personally, keeping in mind that rangers get the whole twf line free (except that mutant otwf) I'd stay pure.


Then there is the most important factor. FUN - regardless what anyone posts here. Can the character perform his expected duties and generate equivilant levels of fun for you? Using the formula of D/E*F-C+ABC, we can determine ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Have fun and if it isnt fun, it needs to be re-rolled.

I decided to go the Tempest route and will probably stay pure Rogue for the favored enemy and multishot feats. Also, I wouldn't want to miss out on the possibility of Tempest2 if or when that gets added to the game.

I wouldn't worry about OTWF too much at high level btw. There are bards, rings (tumbleweed), and alot of other ways to sneak your attack up to the +30 (with power attack on) mark.

I have to ask why 7.5 points are being dropped into UMD? Even buffed you'll only get to 19 or 20 right?
