View Full Version : Pally Love? How about Freedom of Movement

I was looking through the Players Handbook to get a better grasp on Monks when I decided to glance at the Pally spell list.

And realized that Freedom of Movement is a standard Level 4 Pally spell.

Why isn't it included in DDO? It would actually be a somewhat useful spell - certainly more than Deathward given that almost all high level clerics cast Mass Deathward these days.

So, since Pallies have been promised some love this would seem to be pretty much a no brainer. And it's not like it would take any development time. Just add it to the list.

Turbine, any thoughts?

Now I am going to have to read the PHB, if indeed it is on the Paladins spell list why don't we have this????

just checked SRD didn't see it on the list........

I'm looking in the Players Handbook - Core Rulebook I, page 167.

The following are listed as Level 4 Paladin Spells:

Cure Serious Wounds
Death Ward
Dispel Evil
Freedom of Movement
Holy Sword
Neutralize Poison

What's missing from DDO?

:D

I doubt it...

May need to update that player handbook to 3.5. Paladins got Freedom of Movement in 3.0 but not in 3.5.

Also, page 167 in the 3.5 handbook talks about breaking items, marching order, and treasure rules.

Take a look. Page 167 (the 2000 edition).

The 3.5 rules came out around 2003 I believe and DDO uses those rules. :p

I didn't make it up. See below.

That would explain it.

Thanks.

Still would be a nice addition.

Guess they thought Pallies were too powerful.

Ahh...if only DDO had that problem. :D

On the other hand, if there's a general feeling that the paladin level 4 spell list is lacking, and it was once a paladin spell in some version of D&D, and the spell already exists in the game anyway....why not give it to them?

Because WotC won't like it? Not saying it's a good reason, but it's the reason.

True.

But DDO isn't 100% consistent with 3.5 anyway. And this would seem to be a justifiable place to vary since: (1) FoM is a spell in 3.5 and already in the game; (2) It was a spell that Pallies did have in the prior (and still somewhat recent) PnP version; and (3) Pally level 4 spell selection currently is really lacking.

True, but adding a spell that wasn't on a class' spell list would be a first, and it seems harder to get done than the changes they have done so far. I'm pretty creating a NEW spell and adding to the paladin spell list is easier for tham than adding an already exisiting one.

Kinda silly IMO, but I guess WotC works in mysterious ways. :D

Seriously though, given how often they change the rules, it doesn't seem they should be very picky about a change like this.

Create a new spell called "Movement of Freedom", or "Wave your hands in the air like you just don't care". I seriously doubt WOTC is that tough on new spell additions, spells are created all over the place in tons of "official" rule books of various kinds. It is much more likely that Turbine just doesn't have the staff to bother creating spells.

Take a look at the "awesome" and "uber" list of level 8 cleric/arcane spells.

Or better yet go look at the Bard spell list and compare that to the "equally awesome" list of Bard spells in the game.

That's why this makes sense. No new spell needed.
