Dear Friends,

A gamer friend of mine emailed me that Gary Gygax, creator of D&D, passed away in his home about an hour ago.

Wikipedia is reporting that he died today as well.

Farewell to a creative imagination and the Master DM!

I will pour a libation in his honor.

-Gengulphus

Edit: Some further, very reliable corroboration: Steve from Troll Lord Games (http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=4373&mforum=trolllordgames), with whom Gygax published several things since 2005.

It certainly seems true. Troll Lord Games published a number of his games recently. Steve (from TLG) and Gary Gygax were friends, apparently.

Truly saddening news. He will be dearly missed. His work and contributions to the gaming world have had a profound impact not only in my life, but also the lives of most of my closest friends.

I propose everyone run Delera's in Tribute.

That man definately changed my life....brought me countless hours/days/years of entertainment.

It is very sad news. I think running Delera's is a good start (as far as fan tributes go)...I remember what Turbine did in AC1 when Douglas Adams died, so I'm sure they'll come up with some very fitting way to commemorate Gary Gygax's passing.

A good friend of mine freelanced with TSR as an artist for years and had some good stories to tell about the TSR crew. Things changed when it went west and he still did work for them, but he said not nearly as much fun as he had with the Geneva crew....

I recommend we all make Delera runs tonight naked with just muckbanes.... and maybe the little water breathing bubbles....

I am sadden by the loss to the community, I am also happy to know his legacy will live on forever in our memories of adventures. Our joy when something we help create becomes what we shaped it to be. In then sunset of his life I can only hope that he knew we loved his creation.

Thank You Mr. Gygax- you gave us a world that will live on in our memories, on the coffee tables, work benches, the hearts, and the homes of people who opened themselves to your creation and ultimately to your wonderful imagination.

Again,
Thank you, and may the heavens hold you in the embrace of glory and light.
Godspeed good sir Godspeed.

Wikipedia is the only semi-official mention I can find.

But it amazing to see the Internet in action.

Google "Gary Gygax Death" and do another search every minute and see another link pop-up from a gamer writing something about it......interesting how the rumor mill goes into action.

Seems legit, but I cannot find a real reliable source yet.

A truely sad day.

Rest in Peace Gary, you will be missed. :(

My roommate and I attended a GENCON in Milwaukee some years ago shortly before the release of 3rd edition.

We attended a Greyhawk seminar in a small room with like 10 other people. I was so surprised there werent mobs of adoring nerds surrounding him. It was just us and Gary. He was great, he showed us the first hand-drawn maps of Castle Greyhawk on fading and yellowed graph paper. He'd shown us the very first set of polyhedral die that he ordered from a schoolastic supply catalog merely used to generate random permutations, soon they would become synonymous with Dungeons & Dragons and the Role Playing Game. I always thought how strange that at the uber-nerd mecca that is GENCON, it was just a handful of us and Gary, Co-Creator of an entire genre and the reason thousands were in Milwaukee at that very moment - in a room talking about Greyhawk, its history, timelines, politics, and how to pronounce some Greyhawkian names. He even told us about the very first 'GENCON's, how it was basically a bunch of people that came over and spent a night or two at his house until things got to big and GENCON as we know it now was born and evolved. I will never forget that day and how special it was for my friend and I.

The next year, we went back to GENCON for the release of 3rd Edition, I was hoping we could talk to him again and I even brought my 'Saga Of the Old City' with to have it signed. To my disappointment the closest we ever got or saw Gary then was him on a stage in a huge auditorium filled with hundreds of people.

Rest in Peace E. Gary Gygax, and know that you have touched and brought joy to many peoples lives. God's Speed.

A devoted fan,

ORCRiST

The creator of my favorite past time. I actually had the chance to play at a game run by him, I still have some manuals that he autographed for me.

GameSpy sits down with the father of Dungeons & Dragons to discuss the creation of the game and his long gaming career.
By Allen Rausch | Aug. 16, 2004

GameSpy: Last question. I hope this doesn't sound morbid, but what would you like to have written on your tombstone? How do you want the world to remember you?

Gygax: I was gonna say, "Better here than Philadelphia," but I think somebody already did that. [Laughs] I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else.

Pretty sad news. I have so many good memories gaming with my friends growing up. The game kept us sane during the long, cold winters in South Dakota. I also think there should be some ingame memorial. He deserves it IMHO.

Sad news, indeed. I wish I had had the opportunity to play a session with him, like some of you lucky people. The loss of another great creative mind is always a sad day. I'm pleased to see the somber reception of this news by this community, unlike what my friend read in the WoW forums where people said things like, "Who was he?" or "Who plays D&D anyway?"

Thanks for helping to create one of the greatest passtimes of my life, and for inspiring so many others.
