Does a character need to have a high enough casting stat to use wands, or do they ignore them? For example, could a paladin with a wisdom of 8 still use cure wands?

the only time stats come into play is for casting the spells yourself. wands and scrolls are esentinaly spell batteries. the caster that made them met all the requirements when he made them so that the owner of the wand/scroll just releases the stored spell.

yes, you just need to be the minimum level.

also, if oyu take one level of cleric and nine levels of fighter, you could still cast min. level 10 wands.

the prev 2 replies missed out something important. to be able to use the wand without any checks, the spell released by the wand has to be in the spell list of that class. if it is not, a umd check is required.

for example, a paladin does not have access to the spell cure critical wounds. you will not be able to activate the cure critical wounds wand. in order to use it, you have to match or exceed the umd required by the wand.

I am not sure if this applies to DDO, simply because I've never had say a cleric with such a low wisdom or wizard with such low int that he couldn't cast his own spells, but, in theory, if you don't have the necessary stat you can't cast the SCROLL even if you know the spell/are of the right profession & level to normally cast it. In such cases, you instead are forced to make an UMD check to handle an item you''d normally not be able to use.

Note that wands don't care about your stats.
