I recently read the D&D Compleate Arcane, I think that's what it was called, it was all about arcane casting classes. Inside it was a section that asked what type of a role you play as a caster. The types listed were as such:
Blaster, Sniper, necromancer, summoner, generalist, buffer, controller, and warrior. I realize that on the online version many spells act diffrently, therefor some of the play styles become so symiler as to be lumped.
In pen and paper blast spells can also hit your party, but online they can't so blasters and snipers are only diffrent in that you focus either in single target, or area spells. Necros in the game don't get to keep their undead between dungeons so they are basicly the same as summoner. So after summing it down here are the play styles with quotes to give you an idea of their style.

Destructive "Maximised Empowered Fireball and 2000 spell points, I am living artillery".

Death "A horde of kobolds in the way? I cast cloud kill. A rogue caster? I cast finger of death. I fear nothing for I am the reaper. ".

Summoner "Summon monster VII, Create undead, Mithral defender, and 3 fighters to stand behind, I'm ready.".

Generalist "The right spell at the right time can prevent a party wipe".

Buffer "The reason I cast these spells on the people in my party is becouse they would whine if i didn't, and besides, we all know they can't do anything without me".

Controller "Ottos sphere of dancing is the best spell ever, they dance like idiots while everyone hacks them to peices in perfect safty".

Warrior " All you other pansy casters can stand behind the fighters, I will be up with them, leading the charge".

Can Sorcerers participate too?

If so, I'm Generalist-Controller. I like CC a lot, but big numbers are always fun... and sometimes nuking is the best CC you can have.

Psi is mostly CC. Holds and charms, with the occasional FOD on the clerics. Man I hate clerics. Did I mention I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE clerics? So controller with a splash of Death.

Psyk is the same, with more HP/SP, slightly worse DC and no FoD. Psyk also hates clerics. Likely to be deleted when Psych hits 14, as Psi is a much better caster. Controller with even less of a splash of death.

Psych is going to be an auto-death/fear machine-gun.

On none of my casters carry a real weapon, other than the dreamspitter (when capped), a returning dagger for periods of boredom, and the occasional potency scepter.

Now starscream is a WF 2rogue/12sorc battlemage. Started with 8 charisma. He is definately your warrior-type as he can't hold a feeblminded halfling, couldn't pk a scaredy-cat, and his firewalls are more for mood-lighting than anything else. But he carries a big stick.

Kurzun (Drow Ftr1/Wiz 13) = Warrior / Generalist

Moo (Sorc 4 Bn 1) = Warrior / Destructive

I'd imagine most wizards tend to be generalists as you usualy have the feats to run good CC (crowd control) spells and good DD (direct damage) spells. Usualy the split class characters and sorcerers tend more towards specilization.

Stryyf Brok - Death and Control - Necromancer

Aspenor Breldulin, Argo - Generalist Enchantment Focused/CC

Aspenor the Beholder Slayer, Ghallanda & Greggore the Charlatan, Argo - Death, Death, Death and control, DPS, Instakill, Charms

fire nuker i like to cook things ;)

Locathus would be a Generalist (swapping spells frequently based on quests), but with tendencies toward the Buffer or Controller.

I would also suggest that the Buffer quote should be more like - "I know that casting one Extended Haste will generate more damage for the party than that Empowered Scorching Ray"

Devestate, my 14 wiz, is a generalist..I have all the buff spells and almost all the metafeats. My damage is good, my spell pen is okay, and before the nerf, i was a cloudkill/fog king...havenot played him much since that...good at control.

Dreadreaper....insta death with the great spell pen and high DCs, backed up as an uber controller with the charm monster, dominate monster, flesh to stone, hold monster, etc...

My other casters are just generalists for fun....

Aspect is a buffer/rogue - hey, you had "warrior" down there, so why not rogue? ;)

Buffer/Controller when I am partied up.
Destructive/Summoner when I am not in a party - I assume Summoner has charms in it, since it is all about generating an army for yourself. Or would it be Controller, since it is about controlling things?

My interests in the wizard class goes back many years for me as I enjoy playing them in pen-and-paper but in DDO things are different. More aligned towards the melee types so I spent some time experimenting and 5 versions later came up with ZEIRA on the Sarlona Server.

Able to hit a Strength and Constitution of 26 and 30, an Armor Class of 52, over 1259 spell points, a first swing attack of +33 and while keeping a 34 Intelligence.

Tactics are like other casters as I will dispense Greater Heroism, Blur, Displacement, Stoneskin and Haste on the party. Refreshing Haste in the thick of battle as it's about to wear off. Drop a few Mass Hold Person or Flesh to Stone on those pesky giants.

I tend to put my Stunning Blow to good use as I swing away with melee types and when the fightings done I happily lob a Greater Teleport for the party so we dont waste time lingering in the dungeon... that and I'm too lazy to walk.

"Let the magic work for you", is my motto.

Generalist mostly but I tend to choose damage dealing spells so i could also be Destructive/Death

My ranger/wizard favors being a buffer when meleeing and a death dealer when skulking in the shadows.

Can a Sorcerer join in?

Villainous - Death & Destruction with a healthy nod towards the generalist.

Mostly, I FoD, Stone, and Hold anything moving, and throw a suggestion around to screw with the enemy ranks. Fear is a favorite spell of mine, and is used liberally. Also, with the full Fire/Ice enhancement line, I'll bring the dps when required.

my own wizzy (warzerk a drow) does a little of all except the summoner and warrior...... fire speced w/ awesome firewalls and rays (don't use fireball that much messing up argo I think) , can pk and fod with the best of them (34 int and has a napkin), he buffs (stoneskin, Gh, dissplacement and resists ect...), cc in a pinch... flesh to stone, danceing balls w/ mind fog, and a web here and there. The neat thing about a wizzy is you can do all of those if you like....I'm rolling a 32 pt dwarf sorc right now who's going to be just a nuker pure and simple with about 300 hp a lvl 14 (got 76 at lvl 4 right now)

Pretty much a straight generalist with my wiz Llev.

For my wiz11/rog3 I would have to say buffer with a minor in generalist.

Just believe in the right spell for the right job to much to play any other way. Which is why I havnt been able to play a sorc yet.

Margolie is a generalist - focus in enchantment, but can do some mass damage with fire and ice. I tend to favor anything that neutralizes the enemy quick - dancing spheres, web, and finger of death.

With over 40 AC, I tend to run with the front liners.

That sentence scares me, glad I'm not a cleric.

With my wizard's 15 AC I tend to be ahead of the front liners...but only because everything tends to be held or dead by the time I get within their range :D

Now in undead quests, Im usually one step behind the rogue hehe.

And Aspenor/Stryyf usually is in the front lines leading the charge with his 9/12 AC (respectively). Especially Asp, rockin 9 AC, 8 when raged. Doesn't matter too much though, everything that gets close to me is vaporized.

Undead? pwnage. I hug mummies.

I would like to amend my 'what type of wiz/sorc' I have....

I am a zerger.

I cannot stand playing my fighter and have to wait for everyone to buff and roll...

My caster just hops in, buffs a few people who are there and then runs to the end killing or controlling everything til the end guy....great fun

EMDeadly is my first caster, and definitely is a summoner/controller. Flaming Sphere/Companion/Summon/Undead and then an army of pink hats with him sneaking on the sidelines is hilarious. Critters have learned to fear the dreaded..."Misadventure" !!

Generalist. I believe versatility is Wizards biggest strength, so figured by remaining a Generalist I have the least trouble switching roles as necissary.

I have 3 currently:

Maxed Beta-created human wiz. Does most wizzy things ... heavily tweaked due to time spent. Fun to play, took whirlwind initially at level 12 just for fun (all 5 feats of it). Now he's respeced as abjuration specialist.

L10 Drow Wizard: min/maxed. Kind of fun, but should have had more con to start for end game content. Has been L10 for a year now... Enchantment speced I think.

Warforged L1 Rogue/ L7 Wizard: Loads of fun levelling this high con, umd, backup trap/unlock monkey. He's been levelled in a guild group with no cleric. I thought he was totally self sufficient until a recent East 3 run. 3 deaths. All from instantaneous rust monster stun kills as they spawned. You put out the CC... you get the insta aggro... you can't even jump and fwall. 110 or so hp currently.
