View Full Version : Auction House Boycott

This isn't a mere complaint. The following is my firm decision. I am a daily customer of the Auction House and a dealer.

I'm exhausted and annoyed by players putting up items on the AH with:

A. No buyouts
or
B. Stupendously high buyouts

And then cancelling their deals hours or minutes before their run-time is up.

Your reasons for doing so are completely irrelevant to me as a buyer. I am not interested in hearing the defense of players who use the Auction House this way nor am I condemning you. I'm simply trying to encourage new methods with using the Auction House.

I choose not to buy or bid on items that are setup this way and I invite you, other players on Sarlona, to please do the same. In an effort to (hopefully) force these types of dealers into more agreeable and fair price ranges. Or eliminate them completely.

This is all about buyouts. I feel more of you need to put up buyouts. Buyouts that are not constructed with utter greed in mind when it comes to common or uncommon goods.

Named or unique rares are difficult to guild a price for. I have not considered them in this decision. Their values are independent. (A conclusion of the buyer who desires them.)

Those that do not use the Auction House frequently may not suffer from irresponsible or untrusted dealers. But those that do certainly have.

I feel prices for the AH should be guilded. If not universely then at least logically.

You may learn that by leaving items at their initial bid and simply multiplying that number by 2-5 is a sufficient buyout. And also a fast way to make earnings. This is essentially what I do with three of my playable chartacters and each of them not only has a treasures worth of desireable items, but also their own amount of wealth in platinum. In the millions. obtained over days and weeks, not months.

This is my new creed. I implore you to join me in doing the same. If you already do; kudos.

Atleast the problem with cancelling auctions will be taken care of in mod5

Since only about 10% of the player base reads the forums, I'm going to have one heck of a good laugh when "those players" get screwed the first time since they won't be able to cancel their auctions.

The AH is pretty pathetic... I'd be happy if people wouldn't post every single item they get in a quest, on the AH. Add that to the fact a +1 Acid longsword (for example) has a buyout of 2mil plat...

I'm not sure making a post in here is going to do any good, but I can understand your frustration. I got so fed up one day I posted a 'Scroll of the Black Moon' (it is a quest item from Threnal) on the AH, I keep it up there with a 1,999,998 mil starting bid and a 1,999,999 mil buy out. Hopefully, some of them will get the message...

I am with ya on that Manny. 99% of the stuff I put on the AH has a buyout, and I price things to sell... I really hate getting unsold items back in my mailbox. Also I try to only put things up there I would consider good to use, either on a capped char, or on a leveling up lowbie of aproptiate level, it amazes me the amount of worthless $#^@ people put up there :/ especially when it is way overpriced and has no buyout.

At least once mod 5 hits we wont have to worry about people pulling things off at the last minute :)

I obviously missed reading that in the WDAs. I'm very happy to hear they're adding that in.

I'm with ya manny.
I dispise posts without a buyout. I don't really like waiting 3-4 days for an item I want now. Even if the buyout is a little on the high side I'd still prefer it to no buyout, I've overpaid for items that I wanted bad enough. That being said I think that if you're charging over the gp value of the weapon it should be worth it, and +1 acid longswords are not worth 5k plat.....

It is crazy! I mean, its not like I can just over look the stupidity and sort by buyouts alone! And its not like I can only look sort by prices! Or better yet, imagine looking by level only... and buyout!!! Anyhow... I think your on to something here... lets all Boycott the AH, and only sell at the Vendors!

P.S.

If you need me I will be waiting in the weapons shop in house D =)

Im not boycotting anything. I have never pulled an offer off the AH and I almost always put a buyout on my posted items, but that is me. I am not going to tell anyone how to sell thier stuff.

I have also been duped at the last moment too, but In my mind I though that the buy was too good to be true anyways. Let the market give what an items worth and drop all this formula for resale talk. Its the American way dont you know!

There are plenty of fair and honest sellers out there that play by the rules and deserve whatever they can get for thier uber stuff. Unfortunately there will always be shady deals and shisters in any marketplace, but to boycott the whole community's market place becasue of these few is silly.

meh... let the free market decide within it's own boundaries.

those that set ridiculously high buyouts don't make sales. it really is THAT simple.

I don't think the problem is just the lack of a buyout or a buyout that is too high....unless you are only looking to shop and not to bid. But the real problem is that everything is WAY over priced. I have never even come close to having the amount of money that some of these things are priced at. That's why when I post something up for auction, I don't put a buyout on it...but I do put it up there for what the game says it's worth, or a little less. I think it's rude and selfish to put a +1 str tome up for 2,500,00 plat!

I really think they need to base the auction posting fee on the amount of money these idiots are asking for instead of just basing it on the face value of the item.

I doubt you'd see too many more multimillion GP buyout prices if these clowns were paying that huge auction fee up front without any guarantee of the item actually being sold.

Hey, Jakylpops... I like that idea! (Of course I like it now cause it doesn't really affect me since I have nothing worth charging a high price for  )

I also agree witht the OP that it is annoying and not very community minded for sellers to withdraw postings, or to post a huge buyout price.

BUT, it is their right to be jerks. Doesn't mean we hafta like it, but it is their right. It is also our right not to patronize them.

I do think unfair practices should be regulated, just not stupid ones. From what I understand, the next update will go a long way towards stopping at least the unfair practice of pulling an auction once it has been bid upon.

I also agree that the lack of a buyout price is annoying. I still think if someone wants to do it that way, let them. I just wont buy from them.

For the record, when I do have something auction-worthy, I usually post it with a starting bid of about half its value, and a buyout of a little more than the vendor would ask. If it goes higher than that, all the better.

One of many reasons new people dont last in the game. You get 25 gp for completeing a quest in the leaky dingy as lvl 2-3 then when they look at the AH and see a +1 shock sword for 100kpp probably figure no point can never have good items. It takes months for people to obtain a mil plat.

So you know op. I agree with ya, Ive been doing this for a while now. I dont buy unless there is a buyout price and if its outrageous forget it. But IMO it is working. i notice HIGH buyout items stay on the ah then get reposted for lower amounts over and over again, so its already started working.......eventually they will learn.

I'm wondering why people get so offended that a price is too high on the auction house. Is it because you want that item for yourself?

I'll bet it is.

Now that we got that out of the way, think about how many other people besides you want that item too.
Maybe there are some great deals on the AH, but they get bought up so fast you will never see them.
I know I have found some great deals and grabbed them as soon as I saw them. But honestly, just like in life, good deals are hard to find.

So basically all you see is the overpriced stuff that no one in their right mind will pay for. While I can agree with the AH item
cancellation argument (which will be fixed in the next mod) I don't buy any of the other complaints I hear about high
prices and no buyout.

If you don't have 5 mil for that Vopal you've always wanted, then deal with it because there are plenty more good people out there that want that same item as bad as you do!

Yea I know, the truth can sometimes hurt, but it is what it is!

So you don't think that things would be a little bit nicer if the economy were a little lower? I truly believe that the prices all started with the plat farmers overpricing stuff. And now that inflation is so high it will never change.
Now do I think that any real players are putting up leet items like vorpals and such on the AH? No. That all still gets trade for other items not sold through AH unless its a 2 hander. So unless something is done about the plat farmers then nothing will ever change no matter how much we complain. But we all know that turbine doesn't carea bout its people and especially us on this game. If they cared or had any thoughts on trying to compete in the MMO market we would have a MOD 10 by now with a whole new world. But what littel mon=ey they get from our small player base is put in LOTR and will keep draining us of our 15 bucks amonth until they can no longer make profit on the upkeep up of the servers and the game will die and turbine will turned all of us who came only for the name DnD into non computer gamers again.

Wow, I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on about all of your points here. I do not think the economy should be lower. We are level 14 characters now! Maybe back in the days when the cap was level 10 or even 12, 5 mil plat was unrealistic, but we are not kids anymore :D. The economy will grow with every level cap increase and rightly so.

I personal have 5 capped characters all of which have at least 2 mil on them. Never did I buy or support farmers, its just a lot easier to get paid more now that I'm pulling level 14 items on all my characters. I agree plat farmers are bad, but they do not water down the market place, the people who buy the plat and want uber items or scales do. Not everyone is as market savvy as you to be able to trade their uber gear. If I find an uber item I cannot use on any of my alts, I sell it for plat. Vorpals are an exception, but to be honest there are not a lot of vorpals for sale anyways with exception to race restricted ones.

As for your cries of Doom, lets be realistic. This game has always had a niche market and is clearly not Turbine's cash cow. It is a fun game and as long as there are people still enjoying themselves, the game will survive. Of course it doesn't get the same attention as LOTR, the movie alone will bring in more paying customers. As a company, you need to focus more effort on the larger customer base. That does not mean they do not care about their product or their reputation in the gaming industry.

If you ask me, 15 bucks a month is a small price to pay for the amount of fun I get playing and having been here since day one and never having to pay for an expansion pack, I am extremely happy with the game thus far.

Lucian_Navarro

My input is simple...

If the price is too high for you, then dont bid on it. Let the seller get stuck with it in his/her pack.

MOD5 will pinch those "pull out" artists as the item will be locked until the duration ends.

All in all, just be happy with what you pull and if you want to trade or buy in the open market then use the forums...

and eventually the plat farmers will dry up! (shhhh - because we all secretly know that they post most of the stuff there anyway)

So basically the casual player shouldn't have good items because they can't get 5 capped toons and don't have time to run pop a billion times on those toons to get 5 mil plat. I do have 3 capped characters but wouldn't say I play enough to ever compile even a million plat.

Yes the casual player should not have the same benefits as the hardcore gamer. If you give the casual gamer the ability to get the same stuff as people who put a lot of time in then it would hurt the game drastically. If you want more, work harder. I can see it now, every level 8 running around playing whack-a-mole with their 50 gold AH Phase Hammers. Access to the same loot for the casual gamer takes the fun out of adventuring in my opinion. If the casual gamer can't afford an item, too bad. You might as well say the casual gamer should get all of his favor for free also. I mean really, why should the casual gamer have to work at favor questing?

These casual gamer equality rants are annoying.

I am not saying the LEET items but some of the prices that people put up for +2 flaming longswords are crazy. But I still wonder how much of your guys lives are spent in this game to ever acquire 5 mil plat. I wouldn't consider myself a casual gamer fluctuating from 25 - 60 hours a week since A year a and a half ago and have never gotten that much plat. Well whatever the only time I really even look in the AH is while leveling otherwise I could care less.

5 Million plat is easy to acquire if you sell the right stuff at the auction house. I have had items fetch 600+k plat at the ah. I am down to about 2 million plat now because I just got done buying a bunch of stuff at the ah for my toons. It's just like the real world, people have a lot of money and spend it. Those of us without money think these rich people are crazy for paying $250k for a sports car while to them it's a drop in the bucket. Most of those high ticket items at the auction house are priced high because the game economy allows for power gamers to become very wealthy. There will always be the rich folk out there paying insane money for items therefore there will be high priced items out there.

The prices at the auction house in my opinion are not out of line. You admitted yourself that you don't use the auction house except for leveling so you will never ever see 5 million plat. You don't need 5 million plat to enjoy this game though so it's all good.

No, this is not the case. Everyone has the same chance to pull a good item on any quest. Some people are luckier than others. Those who play more have more opportunities to pull good stuff, but nothing is ever guaranteed. When you say good items, I assume you mean an item that is good in the sense that it fits your characters build. This could be a very specific item that is really hard to find or get, so the high broker price is justified. I'm sure there are plenty of good items you have found that you just cannot use. That is why the AH is so great, because you can sell the rare stuff you cannot use for a good price and then maybe get something you need.

All you need to do to get to 5 mill plat is a one lucky vopal pull or a good +5 set of mithril armor. It is not the amount of time you put in, it is the luck of your draw and your market knowledge of what items are worth a lot!
