Build Name: Lady Luck
Author: Sigfried Trent
Requester: Irreversible
Last Updated: 07/27/10

Key Words [Rogue, Kensei, Assassin, Traps, TWF, Halfling, Finesse, UMD]

Objectives
The requester wanted a female halfling with weapon finesse, good UMD, and strong rogue skills. They wanted a mix of rogue and fighter but to be primarily a fighter based build. Rogue and fighter are a tricky mix when you have the majority in fighter because everything is a cross class skill and you have few skill points to work with. They asked for 28pts so this one is tome free which makes it more of a challenge to assemble.

Design
The only way I could get the skills to work and still keep a focus on fighter is to alternate levels. This means you get your prestige enhancements more later than sooner, but it does make for a fairly smooth level progression. Spot and UMD tend to cycle up and down a bit which can make for a kind of choppy experience and a long wait for the next bump.

I went with Kensei as the DPS advantage pairs well with Rogue sneak attack DPS and to offer good damage on a finesse character. Finesse makes good sense on halfling rogues as you are playing to its strengths rather than its weaknesses in all cases. Still, you want enough strength on the build to offer damage bonuses and 13 is needed for power attack. Along with assassin to boost sneak attack damage and some amount of halfling guile the DPS is pretty decent overall and it develops pretty quickly.

On the skills side things were tight. More Int would have helped as would more charisma. They wanted “great” UMD but a high charisma just doesn’t make a lot of sense here. A 32pt, tomed version would improve on the skills profile. It does work in skill focus UMD and has full ranks as well as a modest skill boost. It should be plenty for solid UMD use so long as you item up for it a bit. Rogue skills are just fine here.

Defenses are pretty good. Hit points are very solid for a rogue like character and AC is pretty reasonable most of the time. Saves are strong except for Will which is a weak point many DPS characters suffer from.

Play
This is not a tank, more a durable rogue that relies less on sneak attack for it’s DPS than most. You still want to maximize DPS by not having agro whenever possible. Be diligent with traps and equip your search and disable items unless you know you are no fail.

Variations
32pts and tomes can really help this build fit into its shoes better. You can do a smoother skill progression and fill out balance and jump to decent levels as well as all around topping off its combat prowess.

Looks good. Only thing I'd change is the armor, the Armor bracers from WW and your full dex would be the same as +5 padded. Go with the robes, and you get a quick change. Robes are also extremely cheap.

Good thinking! I'll adjust that, and it gives you more room to grow since it isn't too hard to get +5 or more bracers later on.

Rogue Skills (Boosted*, Heroism Potion, +13 item, +5 tools, ): Disable Device* 50, Open Lock* 55, Search* 44, Spot 36, UMD (Inc Command Item and Golden Cartuche) 34

You lost me on the UMD calculations (and/or explanation).

17 Base Ranks
+4 Bonus from final 18 Charisma stat
+2 Heroism
+3 Golden Cartuche
+3 Rogue Skill Boost II

I am pretty sure Command provides the same kind of boost as the Golden Cartuche, so won't stack. Has this changed? I know I've looked at this with Haggle in the past and it didn't stack then.

Where am I missing the other 5 points?

I'm not entirely certain that command and the Cartuche work together, you may well be correct about that. I know haggle items and command do not work togetehr so you are likely correct!

The bonus you were missing was Skill Focus UMD and me stacking command and cartuche. I'll adjust the total in the build. THANKS!

She won't be so lucky on her saving throws. Changing out fighter for paladin would correct this.

Messes up the feat selection though.

No it just slows it down. Its worth the trade off imho.

This seems inconsistent. In your commentary you said you went with the dragonmarks because "I had two open feats at 6 and 12 and no great feat choices"

Swapping out the Fighter levels for Paladin would effectively be of trading your not-so-great dragonmarks for better saves. This would also free up action points for better boosts, improved subtle backstabber, or improving any number of other enhancements.

Alternately you could go Ranger 6/Rogue 8. This would bump your sneak attack to 4d6, get you improved uncanny dodge, and free up the action points spent to improve the dragonmarks. This option may not jibe with original request to be 'mostly fighter'.

Well after working in the dragon marks I was quite happy about having them there. I really don't think the fort or reflex save need to be higher, will would be nice and I'll admit and paladin does have a few advantages.

Most non-paladin builds do not have amazing saving throws in every category, and not every build is a paladin build. There is a very real trade off between the feats and the saving throws. I'm not saying its a bad way to go, but it is a significant difference in what the build does.

Not so great dragonmarks... You are getting 5 full Heals, 6 Cure Modrate Wounds, and 7 Cure Light Wounds cast at 14th level that can be enhanced by potency of devotion items. I wouldn't characterize that as weak at all. Being able to have this much healing, greater two weapon fighting and rogue skills is pretty nifty. The only other build that could pull it off is Ranger 11, Rogue 3.

You can't take more subtle backstabber or most of the other enhancements I've chosed due to class limitations so you would likey spend the remaining points on... well there isn't much to spend them on for Ranger 6 Rogue 6 Paladin 2

It's workable, but at that point I'd be shifting into a more Rogue 10 Fighter 4 kind of configuration and really focus on being a rogue, but that as you note was not the request. I don't feel improved uncanny dodge is really worth much over uncanny dodge and at that point you will want to go and get improved evasion. Actually if you steer in that direction you really want to look at Ranger 11 Rogue 3, but that is more suited to elves and drow for various reasons.

Its been a while since the last time i read the forums, and im so happy to find out that u made the build i requested, all i wanted to say was THANK YOU SOOO MUCH.... i´ve seen a lot of ur builds running around in different servers and working pretty well, imho this makes the character selection 4 groups much more diverse and interesting. Recently opened my 32 pt character, great timing to try this build with some extra stats :D.

Im trying this build
but this is 3 years old ... and Im a new player ... so ...

any considerations to what to do?? is there something that need to be changed or adjusted?

And I didnt understand why robes would be better than armor ... I can use heavy armor.
Are rober better in this build ?? at what lvl ? why?

when should i start dual weilding ?? lvl 5 (2nd lvl ranger)? later?

I just past lvl 04 (just now) ... and never being high lvl, so enjoying mid lvl are important to me, since Im learning the game and making quests for the first time.

thx a lot.

Personally, I'd recommend scrapping the build and starting fresh. As you've noted it's three years old - and a lot has changed in that time.

You generally want to use robes as soon as your dex bonus is higher than your armor will allow (chain shirt, for example, allows a max of +4) - also keep in mind that evasion, one of your best abilities, requires light armor or robes to function.

No idea if you have any interest, but I've updated the build. It still has the same goals of the original (finesse fighter w/ strong rogue skills and high umd), but accounts for the changes that occurred over the years. It's very new player friendly; it needs a single +1 tome at very high level, has overkill in trap skills, has excellent AC and respectable damage.

Some changes:

The build now goes up to level 20 because there are 20 levels =p. More fighter levels have been added to give a dps boost and a few bonus feats.

Ranger now has the Tempest enhancement. This is probably the single largest boost of dps any two-weapon fighter can get. The dragonmark chain was cut and the tempest pre-reqs (dodge, mobility, spring attack) were added.

Charisma only adds a few points to umd, and effects nothing else. 8 Charisma + 23 ranks + feat + items will still allow you to hit the magic UMD number (40, for heal scrolls) at level 20. Dexterity got a bump because it's much harder to get a dexterity bonus over a strength bonus.

Combat Expertise was added. You'll have very nice AC since you went with high dexterity, so you might as well be able to get an incredible score when necessary.

wow, thx a lot man. really.

Only one thing ... I really like the dragonmarks.
I play with friends and we have no cleric in the group, so Im the only healing option of the group. not great but yet usefull.

On this new build, what could I do to keep the dragonmarks ?? Or Should I really loose it and stick with that new build ??

Thx a lot.

For a more DPS focused build, since combat expertise and power attack can't be on at the same time, you could switch out CE for EWP:Kopesh and switch the relevant feats and enhancements to Slashing/Kopesh

Its a finesse build ... kopesh is not finessable.
