View Full Version : Challenge: Dragonmarked builds!

I've had a lot of trouble designing a dragon marked character that I wanted to play, so I wanted to start a challenge thread(for my benefit and edication!) - please post your Power gamer dragon marked build ideas. :)

The build needs to:
- be survivable at low levels
- derive benefit from the Mark as a group member in the end-game

Solo-ability isn't the focus here - we know how cool it is to be able to Dimension Door with a fighter, but in a good high-level group someone else can just cast it. THis has kept me away from the Marks of Warding, Passage, and Sentinel - yeah, it's cool, but the clerics and arcanes can do it too, better, and more often.

I have some theories, but I haven't built them to my satisfaction...

A pure rogue with the Mark of Shadows?
A bard with the Mark of Shadows?
An Arcane or a Melee with the Mark of Healing?

Interesting challenge. Does it have to be a "pure" build, or can you splash a few levels of another class?

Been enjoying my Dragonmarked Halfling Cleric as inspired by the Halfling Medic (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=116108) thread on the Cleric board.

Easy enough. I'll toy around with ideas tonight and post something either Friday or Saturday.

I haven't really thought if it would be worth it one way or another...but a level of Cleric would allow you to take Empower Healing Spell for +50% on those heals and Life Magic I for another +10%, and wand use, and a few other utility spells. With a Superior Potency/Devotion item that's better than what a Paladin can do with LoH.

This inspires two other versions..

Halfling 14 cleric - Gr. Mark of Healing, Empower Healing, etc. Ultimate healbot.
1/2ling 9 cleric/ rest fighter/paladin - battle cleric - Mark makes up for mana used on buffing..

You could argue for just the Least Mark - or the Lesser, since nobody has DD at level 6. In the end-game though, I wonder how often you would need DD or Teleport. Yes, they're cool! but so is Improved THF, etc. :)

Since you did rogue levels, how about a build like this, but an elf with the Mark of Shadows? Or am I just obsessed? :)

The same thing can be said about all the [useful] dragonmarks.... any Rogue with UMD can use a Scroll or wand to simulate that ability.. and Shadowalk is pretty useless since it breaks if you attack....

A Halfling Cleric with Healing marks?

How Usefull is DDoor? Well, I will be able to solo the Power COnduits inthe Twilight Forge :)

ANd Teleport? Lets just say my Rogue will burn through 4 or 5 Greater Teleport scrolls sometimes to get back to the Gianthold.....

I've got a halfling fighter in the works. Going straight fighter, twf, and taking all 3 of the healing marks. This means, if you put full AP into them, you'll get 5 heals, 7 cure serious, and 9 cure lights. Talk about usefulness. Got the feats to spend, as a fighter, too. Maybe a splash of rogue would be useful, but that's not my plan. Going with a decent str as well.

Sweet builds! Thanks for the link aggregation.

I like the damage burster - especially in quests where you can control the pace of the fighting... and the Shadowblade, that's darn cool, and he only used 2 feats to get dragon-marked displacement.

"in the works" may mean you're not ready to share ( and to that I say "NP". But I'm suffficiently curious to ask: 28 or 32 pt? How did you arrange starting stats, and which feats at level one?

I've tinkered with a small band of halflings (rog/rog, rog/wiz, rog/rng) and the least healing mark is quite useful at lowest levels. It'd probably be even more useful if I were reckless ;) These were casual efforts, and I'm still sorting my impressions. I suspect they go a little further on a character with low HP. I'm hoping they scale in usefulness.

I came up with a battle bard that uses the Mark of Passage.

http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?p=1301622#post1301622

I also had a build for an Elven Paladin the used the Mark of Shadow, mainly for the self displacement. I had planned to build up the strength, and add in the Paladin "hate" enhancement (don't recall the correct name) and the Undying Host faith line. Not sure where I put the print copy, and I seem to have forgotten to save it :o .

Your Shadowblade looks pretty good, I think the displacement + DPS would be an great combo. I would have concerns about the Dwarven build, though, especially at higher levels. A lot of creatures seem to have evasion and pretty good reflex saves, so you could end up with a bunch of "Save" message and no damage.

Yup, that is why I did that post about the bard alternative. You probably need the high charisma mod for elite content.

The shadowblade is awesome. I'm playing a TWF one currently. The displacements are stellar for boss/big fights.

The Halfling Dragonmarks are pretty useful, so I also created a Halfling Two-Weapon fighter. She's not quite the beast that the Two-Handed fighter is, but she's not supposed to be. She's still been fun to play.

I'm working on a halfling rogue/ranger. Don't have the entire thing worked out, but he's only level 3 right now. I plan on taking the full dragon mark line. It's a 32 point build, so plenty of intel and strength for skill points and melee. (He also ate an intel tome at level 1 to get up to 16) I think the rogue/ranger mix works well cause you really don't HAVE TO HAVE any feats at all to make them workable. That allows you to splurge on the full heal mark without gimping the build. I won't have extend. I won't have both improved crits (i usually take both ranged and piercing with a ranger build). But no biggie. I'll be able to pop paladin sized heals to help keep the melee's on their feet. (and occasionally myself, as well)

Here is one that I put together in game on a whim. In game the character is about lvl 5 right now, but this is the progression I am planning on taking.

The concept is one that I present Sigtrent with for his Request a Build thread. Difference here vs. there is that I am going to take some Dragonmark feats cause I think they are kind of cool. I debated going all the way up to Greater, but since the build is not finese based there was a blank feat in there and figured what the heck. Every now and then you need to shield block a door with casters on the other side, afterall.

The original concept was a Fighter / Paladin / Ranger that uses both longswords and piercing weapons while two weapon fighting. Because I wanted that +1 for the Faith Enhancement, the longsword is required here.

If 20 was available the character would be a Fighter 6 / Paladin 3 / Ranger 11. Giving the character GTWF along with additional feats for Improved Critical Slashing and Piercing.

Here is my try at this. Ignore the skills, after level 4 I was sick of wasting time with all the clicking, and the skills aren't really important to this build. This build gives a fully functional Wizard, with the ability to easily step in as a healer if things go wrong, or you're just sick of waiting on a cleric to start the adventure. You even have a few DVs to boot.

For a halfling ranger/rogue I'd throw in a wiz level to triple your cure spells (has to be done at level 3). You also get a significant amount of extra mana for your buffs.

For the halfling wizard I'd take bard instead of cleric so that you can have max UMD.

High Elf - 1Rogue/13Cleric

Starting Stats (32):
Str - 8
Dex - 10
Con - 12
Int - 18
Wis - 16
Cha - 8

Rogue at level 1. 18 Intelligence will let you keep Disable Device, Open Locks, and Search maxed as you level. Also take Elven enhancement-line for Search since this can be the "toughest" area for rogues.

Feats:
All 3 Dragonmarks
Empower Healing
Mental Toughness

Shadowalk and Invis yourself throughout the quest to remain unnoticed and untouchable to the mobs while healing and buffing your party. The ultimate support class, you can easily take care of any traps/locks besides the Cabal trap as well. Be 95% cleric and solve the need for a trap-monkey easily. Can take 2nd lvl of rogue and get evasion + max spot; but would recommend more points into Dex to take advantage of evasion if this is the case.
