I think it would be cool to have an area or quest where you could practice fighting and tactics. The idea is you and/or your party enter an arena, talk to the "Arena Master" NPC to set up the type and numbers of monsters to spawn, and then fight.

There should be 2 modes:
- Practice Mode - where there is no xp penalty for dying and no xp gained
- Gladiator Mode - where you get xp based on the degree of difficulty of the match and where the full effects of death are on. The degree of difficulty could be based on level, numbers in the party, and equipment, etc.

This would allow people to try out new strategies, learn how to fight specific kinds of monsters, practice team tactics, see how different types of weapons compare, etc.

Just a thought.

interesting idea...

would also be more "real ish" if you also had to pay a nominal fee to enter or what not...

I suggested something similar a long time ago, as part of a gambling area. Idea was to set up a full blown gambling hall (maybe where Bringing the Light is after that quest was completed). Inside you would be able to play games of chance, ie. poker, blackjack, slots, craps--either alone or with other players while trying to find groups. (Great plat sink)

Then there would be a back room, with the exact type of arena you are talking about, plus letting players bet on who is going to win. In addition, you could play a few more unsavory, but fun games for non-lawful characters (bring some roleplaying into it) like dwarf tossing and kobold fighting. This area would be invite only, after you have completed something through an NPC (could be as simple as winning big at something or having to break someone's legs or have an actual quest associated with it.

This was back when it was really hard (1hr+, frequently) to get a group. The idea was to give players something to do inbetween time. Now with all the guilds and, frankly, more players, finding a group is not that hard anymore.

Either way, sorry for the wasted space. Nothing came of it, nor do I expect it.

This idea has been brought up more than once and died out more than once. Personally, I think a training-area kind of place is a great idea - make it like PvP so there's no death XP penalty or equipment damage, and it'll be perfect.
