Item Basics
Dungeons & Dragons Online features several types of in-game objects with many uses! You'll want to inspect these items to learn what they are, and what they can do for you while you're adventuring in Xen'drik. Items have many different qualities associated with them, so it's a good idea to learn about item types, how to get items, and other basics!

Types of Items

Many of the objects you find in-game will have different colored images and borders to help provide visual clues of what type of item you’ve found. If you’re unsure, be sure to inspect your item to view more details about it by moving your mouse cursor over top of it. You can also visit the Compendium Advanced Search Feature to search for the item, and read more about how it can be used.

The primary types of objects you will encounter are:
  • Equipment – these can be worn by your character, and often can improve your character’s abilities, attacks, or provide other helpful effects.
  • Consumables – these items can be used by your character one time to grant temporary benefits
  • Gems – can be offered to NPCs in exchange for in-game money
  • Crafting Ingredients – can be combined together to create equipment, consumables, or other objects through the crafting system.
  • Money – The in-game currency used to interact with vendors, the auction house, and other in-game systems.
  • Collectibles – can be traded in to some NPCs in exchange for special items or rewards
  • Quest Objects – used to unlocked doors, complete quest objectives, or gain access beyond barriers. Can take the form of keys, notes, or other items specific to the quest.

Acquiring and Discarding Items In-game

In order to acquire items in-game, you need to know how to find them! Items can be collected from several different sources:
  • Fallen foes – Sometimes creatures and enemies you fight will provide a treasure bag with a collectible for their defeat.
  • Quest Rewards – By helping the story characters of Dungeons & Dragons Online, you can receive items as a reward for your services!
  • Vendors – It is possible to use your in-game money to purchase items from vendors and shop keepers.
  • Breakable objects – There are crates, barrels, and more items that you can smash open and you may find treasures inside them!
  • Crafting – If you participate in the crafting system, you can find ingredients to make new items!
  • Collectibles – By clicking on parts of the environment around you, you can gather items that some NPCs will collect in exchange for a reward.
  • The Auction House – It is even possible to purchase items from other players!
To learn more about these systems, be sure to visit our other articles as well as the Compendium!

While it’s important to know where to find items, it’s also a good idea to be aware of how you can get rid of items that you don’t want. In the event that you no longer want an item, you can sell it to a vendor, sell it on the Auction House, or even destroy it.

If you want to destroy an item, drag the item out of your inventory and drop it somewhere on the landscape. You will receive a confirmation message asking if you would like to destroy the item. Once you select “yes” in the confirmation screen, the item will be destroyed. Be careful, and always double check confirmation messages to make sure you aren’t destroying the wrong item! Remember that once an item is destroyed, you won’t be able to get it back unless you visit a vendor to purchase it back. Also remember that in some cases, if you destroy an item that is a part of a quest you’re on, it could cause hinder you in completing the quest objectives!

Item Properties

Once you’ve found an item, there are other important item properties to keep in mind that can impact how, or even if, you can use an item that you come upon.
  • Bound Items
  • Item Restrictions
  • Cooldown Times
  • Item Rarity
  • Unique Items
Bound Items

While there are many objects that can be freely traded between you and other players, some become bound to you once they are placed in your inventory. “Bound” items can’t be traded, sold, or mailed between other players or characters. There are three types of bound items. Items that bind when you place them in your inventory are called “Bind on Acquire”. Equipment that can be traded, but once worn becomes bound, is called “Bind on Equip”. In both cases, once an item is bound, it can’t be unbound. The final type is "Bound to Account". This means that while you can't trade or sell the item to other players, you can place the item in your account-wide bank and any character on your account can use the item.

Item Restrictions

Not all equipment can be used by all races and classes. There are even items that can’t be used until you achieve a high enough character level. Equipment or items that have a red bar with an X on their icon, mean that you’ll be unable to use that item if you don’t meet the requirements of the item’s restrictions. Be sure to inspect item descriptions to determine if you are able to use them or not, or if you can earn the ability to use them at a later time. Red text will help to explain what requirements you currently don’t meet.
In some cases, you may be able to use an item, but not very well. These items will have a yellow bar with an X on their icon, meaning that you’re able to use the item, but may experience a high rate of failure or poor performance while using the item. You might even lose access temporarily to some class abilities for trying to use items you’re not proficient with.

Cooldown Times

There are some equipment items that allow you to create temporary effects on yourself or other characters and enemies, but with a limit on the frequency that you can do so. This is known as an item’s “Cooldown." Once the item is activated, you will be unable to use the item until the cooldown time is over. You can see a graphical representation of this on the item – the item icon will become more grayed out, and gradually reveal the original icon look as you approach the end of the cooldown cycle. Most cool downs are very short, but on occasion you may find an item with a cool down longer than a moment or two.

Item Rarity

Some items are more easily found in the game world than others, and are therefore also more valuable and sought after. This is referred to as an item’s “rarity.” You can check an item’s rarity by inspecting it for what style border the item’s inspection window has:
  • Copper - Common
  • Silver - Uncommon
  • Gold - Rare
  • Platinum – Very rare
Be sure to check the rarity on an item before you sell, trade, or destroy it, it might be very valuable or special!

Unique Items

There are some items that are so rare, so special, that you can only have one of them. These are known as “unique” items. If an item is listed as unique in its description, you will not be able to own a second one on your character.

Other Helpful Information about Items

Items can do more than just fill space in your inventory. Get the most out of your items by learning how you can use them!
  • Placing Items On Hotbars
  • Item Storage
  • Customizing Items

Placing Items On Hotbars

You never know when you might need to change the items you’re using, or suddenly need to use a consumable or other item in the heat of battle. To make it easier to access these items, it is possible to add them to your hotbars to allow you to switch between items without having to open your inventory. To add an item to your hotbar for use, drag the item icon down onto an open hotbar space. You will be able to click directly on the hotbar to use that item from then on!

Item Storage

You won’t always need every item you find right away, so to save room in your inventory, you can store your items in your bank. Dungeons & Dragons Online offers storage space in the forms of:
  • Banks
  • Account-wide Banks
You can place your items in these places so that you save room in your inventory bags. You will even have the opportunity to unlock additional bank storage should you need it!

Customizing Items

Many users enjoy giving items a more personal feel. You can customize item properties using Eldritch devices! Find out more about how you can customize items using in-game systems by visiting our other gameplay guides, as well as the Compendium!
