The Portal Opens XP?

XP? as in why did I get XP for this quest? It said my goal was to defeat the High Priestess, but once again, I didn't get to defeat the Big Bad Guy. I got to fight them a bit and then stand around helplessly while another NPC did the work.

Half the point of red and purple names having their immunities is (a poorly conceived idea) that we should have to beat them down (instead of getting to use our abilities). Even this idea is tossed by the wayside when we don't actually get to beat the Big Bad.

If you want to write a story or monologues, go work on a novel or movie script. This is not the place for them.

Hekta Szind is the end boss in The Portal Opens. I have never had an NPC fight her, it's always been me, or someone in my group if I am not solo that kills her. The only NPC that enters that fight with you is Anna, and she takes off into the Portal leaving you to fight several waves of baddies and the Priestess as well. Once you kill her she begs and pleads to Lloth but dies anyway, and the big bad Goristo you see at the end of it is just there to give you a warning. You wind up killing a big bad Goristso named Grulemith at the end of Trial By Fury in the next chain that takes place in The Demonweb, but he's not the boss in The Portal Opens.

I get what the op is trying to get at. You don't actually land the killing blow on the NPC. However, not every quest ends with a boss and not all bosses are "defeated" by killing them. As mentioned above, while you don't land the killing blow, the story is advanced as a direct result of your efforts. It's not exactly what you'd expect, but you did play a role, and therefore you are granted experience for your effort.

I find the greater concern is that as players we allow so much monologue to take place, especially in U14. So much talking. Add a silence spell to the game so that I may cast it on overly verbose bosses to move on to the killing (or near killing in this case). Or as an alternative allow players to become invincible... as long as they continue to talk to the mobs about their aspiration for world domination and for as long as they wish to do so.

I don't about this, I would say 90% of the time my group has landed the killing blow on her, either through dots or massive damage, its not that hard to kill her before she becomes invulnerable.

wait someone is complaining for once that one quest changes the way its ended. omg the doom doom now. Seriously, you want to complain about this? i like the way this is done. it works nicely into the storyline. i don't need to get the killing blow like i did on EVERY other dungeon in the freaking game.


what is the point of a game if they don't talk? if you want killing games just go play a shooter. problem solved no thinking no talking. i would get bored of a "role playing game" if there was no talking. what would be the point of it.

How about instead of that, if you don't like stories, don't play RPGs? Especially ones set in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign world.

But you did defeat the bad guy. Grab a dictionary and look up defeat.

I like when you can get around a boss without actually fighting and I like alternate quest styles (as long as protecting a 'Coyle' type is not involved).

Does every quest need to end with a surround and beat down?

Especially when the first time you do that fight, there's a lot of "Uh-Oh's" going around..
I thought for sure there was going to be yet ANOTHER epic boss fight, but instead things get wrapped up.


If anything, I give the dev's +1 for creativity on this ending, especially because it foreshadows an upcoming quest boss.

Mine wasn't "uh oh", but something else followed with "... but wait, I'm out of sp?!?!?!"

I think the ending way is creative and your complaint here is silly.

I think it was to foreshadow what's up with the drow goddess - she killed the one who brought her the Thread of the Weave. She's heartless and has her own motives and her drow worshippers try desperately in vain to please the arbitrary needs of their goddess, in which their reward is an eternity on the Demonweb after death, which is probably very shortly if they see you coming.

While normally I hate that kind of an ending to a quest, where someone else does the killing blow to the boss, I think it was done very well in this quest. Instead of having Ana teleport in and poke the priestess with a sewing needle, it is Lolth who kills her own follower.

There are so many other quests that you could complain about for having an ending like that, go pick a different one.

..as in I am amazed, AND this is the game I wish most of you would have just stayed with rather than coming over here to annoy the old timers. Learn to read kiddies. It's not that hard. This is based on a ROLE PLAYING GAME. The primary idea behind a role playing game is that the DM is telling a story and you are part of the narrative. it is ALL ABOUT story. You guys are like the person that says they love Shakespeare, but they wish he would stop using such big words.

Speak for yourself. I've always landed the killing blow on her. She shatters into a thousand ice shards every time, and the Goristro talks to empty air.
