Intimidate

Kender are the only race to have an actual taunt ability in pen and paper. Kinder use the bluff skill in order to taunt. Later, there was the goad feat. Intimidate was made for demoralization and being feared or shaken. Although DDO adopted a different effect for intimidation, the D&D texts are against it.

A halfling fighter could use bluff, rather than intimidate to taunt. The entire two lines of the fighter and paladin tank enhancements are not available to halflings. I've tried a couple of times to make that build without any success. Even the elf may taunt better than a halfling. Elves, IMO, are supposed to be the kindest creatures in D&D.

Haflings are *not* kender. They are two different things. However, yes, intimidate is basically opposite what it is in pen and paper.

Its not so different. Both are based upon getting your opponent to believe that you are more dangerous. DDO just doesn't have foes who run away if scared.

When you say the lines are "not available to Halflings", do you mean halflings cannot take them?
Or that they just have a penalty if they do take them?

Because those are two different things.

Just to clarify, which group of elves are you talking about here?

The creepy necromantic elves who like their ancestors so much , they have them carry on walking around after they die, and whose gestalt of rulers is a divine-level power that has held off raids from the Dragons?

The ravening band of horsemen that will pick fights just for kicks and who, man for man, were the most capable and feared fighters in the Last War?

Or the jolly entertainers who use their jobs as cover for espionage, assassination, and murder?

What were you doing wrong? I've done both! Even with the racial penalty I was also still getting Intimidate success.

Eberron Elves are "Sociopathic Klingon Riders of Rohan Vietcong Vikings with Scimitars", to quote TVTropes. They "live for battle, so much that some of them are considering starting another World War simply to get more fighting."

Kindest creatures. Right. =P

Even Forgotten Realms elves aren't so fluffy and cuddly. Ignoring the sociopathic (at best) Drow, let's see what we've got.

Moon Elves - Your 'normal' elves. They waged a war against the Drow so bloody, so terrifying, that it cemented their reputations as people who kill you for going into the forest. In modern times, they've spawned the Eldreth Veluathra (a Elf-supremacist group with many members who believe that if you aren't an elf, you shouldn't be breathing) and the church of Shevurath, the Black Archer...who's members swear never to sing, dance, laugh, or smile until every drow and all their gods are dead.

Sun Elves - The 'High Elves'. Incredibly intelligent and arrogant to match. The inventors of Elven High Magic, which has included such 'sweet and gentle' gifts to the world as a spell that makes all red dragons in a thousand miles go into a murderous rage...at first at the High Mage's target, but then, once the target is dead, they stay awake and angry. These are also the elves that bound a Kraken and enchanted it to kill any ship that gets near their island.

Star Elves - Beautiful and charming...and xenophobic. Rarely seen, and they aren't going to get any more social, being that their nearest neighbors are orcs, hags, and Thay.

Green Elves - The 'Wild Elves'. Lets take a short hop back to xenophobia-ville. The rep the moon elves got is actually real with the Green Elves. They'll kill you just for entering their territory...which they don't mark.

Half-Elves - usually raised by humans, which is what many elves call them, because in their books, if you have /any/ non-elven blood...you're not an elf at all anymore.

Fey'ri - A lesser known branch of the elven family tree. This is what happens when a house of Sun Elves simultaneously decides that the best courses of action are to breed a massive army, and to breed with Balors. The sun elves have been hush-hush about them, and sealed them in an extradimensional prison after a horrible battle. The Fey'ri broke out though, and have been increasing their numbers again. And this time, there's no 10th level magic to help stop them.

So, the nicest ones we've got are the Moon Elves, who have a capacity for violence to rival any human, and once they decide something is worth getting violent about, have a bit of a racial penchant for no-quarter genocide. Oh, and they made some of the most devastating weapons ever seen. Some so powerful that they rival the works of Netheril and High Imaskar...which means they have the potential to kill gods on their own, no need of a high-level user.

No, I'd say the kindest race in D&D is a tie between halflings (not the Talenta Plains halflings, and CERTAINLY not the Athasian halflings) and Gnomes. And even Gnomes have been known to keep Dire Badgers as pets.

Eberron Gnomes?
The ones who regard collecting blackmail material on their friends as the equivalent of light gossip. Whose nation has no standing army, but borders on the expansionist Hobgoblin nation without losing ground. Where the leading cause of death amongst criminals and enemies of the state is "mysterious causes". Who have held a monopoly upon the secrets of elemental binding despite the best efforts of an entire dragonmarked house since they stole them.

Okay, maybe not THOSE gnomes. :) I'll lump them in with 'anything from the Demiplane of Dread' for 'don't spend any time with'.

Id probably vote for kobolds when it comes to the kindest. They usually have some sort of reason behind their actions.

Why does there even have to be a "kind" race? Why can't members of nonhuman races have individual personalities within their racial tendencies just like humans?
