The Big Honking Newbie Thread
******EDIT********
This is going more slowly than I had hoped, mostly due to a mix of laziness and getting distracted when i log in to get screenshots. It's still in progress, and if it isn't done before F2P launch, i promise to strip my fleshy characters as close to naked as they'll get and make them dance in the marketplace for your amusement. (just be glad it isn't me, as that would cause a run on blindness pots)
***EDIT 2***
The push back on release date is letting me be more lazy. :D
******
Some information I'm lacking:
Damage Rating on wepaons - does this number actually mean anything/have a use?
Bard Spells - still haven't run a bard, so i don't know how the spell selection works - memmed or sorc like.
Has the energy protection overrun ignoring resistance bug been fixed yet? (i.e. 30 points get past the last of a protect spell, and ignores your 30 resist)
And yes, I'm basically rewriting the manual - which is hard to find and (last time I looked) is pretty outdated.

Sitting here eating breakfast and waiting for servers to come back up, I had the (arguably not-so-) bright idea of building a seriously basic newbie advice thread. I keep reading horror stories about first level characters trying to dual wield dwarven axes and the like, so it seems like we need a good, complete guide to the (to us) simplest of things.
I'm going to be reserving several posts before I get down to actually writing this thing over the next day or so, so please wait until I've got a post up (probably like number 8 or some such ridiculousness) that says go ahead and post before breaking my combo.
Currently, sections look like:
Table of contents, with links (this one)
UI and suggested setup options - tips on hotbars, what the buttons at the top mean, turning on voice chat, tooltips, etc
Smacking stuff around, not getting smacked yourself - how to make it more likely to hit things and less likely to be hit. Includes saving throws. Early combat tips - like using a shield until you get ITWF, high to hit vs extra damage dice, not dual wielding dwarven axes with a wizard elf, etc
Lighting things on fire with your mind - magic, getting DCS/SPs up, charmy handling and the like. Probably going to include "decoding those floaty numbers" in here
Skills - a list of what skills actually do
+
You want to do what? - tips on getting skills/sets of skills working together - aggro handling and stealth, mostly
Equipment effects and (the lack of) stacking
Early equipment to look out for - korthos gear, poison, disease, UA gear. Early scroll use (I've met somewhat veteran players that don't know about this), potions you should try to buy. The joy of the overlooked command gear. Clickies!
Filthy lucre - now that you know what to keep, here's how to sell the rest of it.
How to find a party - a few tips on how to locate something to do, and keep from ticking off the people doing it with you.
