Crafting Basics

The world of Eberron is a place filled with magic and intrigue, and nowhere is that more evident than with DDO’s crafting system. Crafting in DDO revolves around mysterious items known Eldritch Devices. The Eldritch Device allows players to create and upgrade items, and to create their own raid loot, using ingredients collected from their adventures! Much is still unknown about the devices, and their full potential and power remain a mystery. The greatest scholars in Stormreach are committed to studying these altars to find out more. What is known about crafting is this:

Recipes

Everything begins with a recipe. Every recipe, which consists of up to five items and ingredients, produces a different item or effect. Recipes are not physical items you find in the game, they’re simply known (or unknown) combinations of ingredients that successfully produce another item or ingredient. Unlike traditional crafting, DDO’s system has no failure rate. If you have the correct items, and the correct recipe, you will be able to successfully craft. Gone are the days of finding that rare crafting ingredient, and losing it due to nothing but bad luck.

Ingredients

There are three main types of ingredients used in crafting: raw, manufactured, and special. Energy cells are occasionally needed as well. They function as batteries for the Eldritch Device.

Raw ingredients can be found in chests or breakable items such as crates, and purchased. They are the weakest of the ingredients, and can be used to create manufactured ingredients, or in smaller recipes.

As mentioned above, manufactured ingredients are created by combining raw ingredients together. They cannot be found or purchased, and can even be used to make other, greater manufactured ingredients.

Like raw ingredients, special ingredients can be found in chests, but are significantly rarer. Special ingredients are known to be used in more powerful recipes.

Energy cells can be purchased or found, and are needed for many higher level recipes, though some recipes contain enough magic on their own to power the Eldritch Device. Energy cells require charges, and they can be recharged by combining the cell with a weapon whose plus value is 6 through 10, depending on the type of the cell.

Eldritch Devices

There are several different types of Eldritch Devices. One kind of device, Altars, are used primarily in the creation of weapons and armor. Stones of Change, another type of device, have several uses related to transformation. Stones of Change can be used to combine lesser items into greater ones, for alchemical changes such as improving minor weapons or shields, transformations such as turning one item into another, and binding and attuning, which prevents an item from taking permanent damage but binds it to you permanently.

The crafting system is unlike you’ve ever seen before, and is just one more element that makes DDO unique. Be sure to check out the Crafting Discussion Forum and the Community Created Guides for information from other players!
