Stormreach Economics Series: Part 4
[23-Jul-2008]

The citizens of Stormreach are facing hard economic times. Signs of trouble are everywhere, with vendors running out of merchandise and panhandlers freely roaming the city streets. In the wake of the attacks from Shavarath on the once beautiful Marketplace tent, the Coin Lords have commissioned a public education project to help citizens with financial hardship. Learn valuable tips for money management in this public service announcement, brought to you in part by the House Kundarak Bank.

Managing The Expenses of Adventuring

Countless travelers each day pay the price of careless adventuring, turning their profits into debts. By becoming aware of common questing expenditures and ways to avoid them (where possible), you can greatly reduce your risk of becoming financially strapped.

Repairs and Attuning Items

The toll taken on adventuring gear from questing can be steep, and can come in many forms. Remembering to repair frequently makes repair bills less expensive; it costs more to repair a badly broken item compared to the bill for a slightly worn item. Item repair costs are based on how damaged an item is and the base cost of the item.

During the course of your adventures you may begin to accrue permanent damage on your valuables! While you can never take permanent damage as a result of death, your gear is still susceptible to permanent damage from everyday wear and tear. Item wear is not limited to times when you die in quests; you can also take wear on your items from being attacked by spells and traps. The easiest way to prevent this is by attuning your item using the Eldritch Device. By placing your item and appropriate number of Khyber dragonshard fragments into a Stone of Change, you bind the item to yourself and prevent permanent damage during your repairs.

Treasure Eating Foes

Throughout the land, there are creatures who hunger for not only for your blood, but for your belongings as well! Knowing how to recognize, and avoid, these monsters is important to reducing the cost of your repairs. The usual suspects include...

The easiest way to deal with these creatures is ranged attacks and wooden weapons. By attacking these foes from range, you avoid the chance that they will touch you and inflict their damage upon your gear. If forced to engage them in melee, use wooden weapons, wooden shields, or special bane weapons, such as the fabled "Muckbane" club.

Here are some other tips to keep you thrifty on your travels:

  • If your end reward selection doesn't include items you find useful, select the item that is worth the highest value and sell it to a broker, vendor, or on the auction house.
  • Always loot gold, silver, and platinum you find in chests. Money doesn't affect your carried weight limits.
  • Kill enemy spell casters first whenever you can; their spells can cause damage to your gear. When possible, try to stay out of the way of their spells to keep repair costs lower.
  • Watch out for items on the ground from smashed breakables. Use your backspace key to target nearby objects, and the U key to pick them up more easily.
  • Ask party members if you can have their unwanted ammunition, potions, scrolls, or other commodities left in chests. This can save you a trip to the vendor to restock your supplies.
